How We’ve Been Prisoners Of Our Genes
The Underlying Purpose of Our Genes
From a global perspective, the drives of our genes are perfectly clear if you observe people’s behavior and the results of this.
Our genes’ fundamental purpose to date, has been to reproduce themselves.
We’re now reaching the physical limit in terms of the number of humans this planet can support, at least with our current way of life, so part 1 of the mission has been accomplished.
Really we can make all sorts of guesses as to why we’re here. The best logic that I can see for our situation is that the (divine?) objective of our genes and the planet has been to accommodate the maximum possible number of people on Earth at this time.
Perhaps this is in anticipation of a particular event, perhaps the 2012 event.
The reason for saying this is that given our current way of life, Earth clearly cannot support anything like 6.5Billion people for more than a short while longer.
Is There A Change In Our Genes Coming Soon?
The Mayan calendar asserts the predicted “2012 event” is meant to be a time when a major shift occurs in the planet’s life context. There are many other commentsators who assert the same thing, albeit from different perspectives.
Essentially, the assertions say that:
- the fundamental vibration of matter and the planet will change and cause a major shift in our genes at the same time.
and/or
- the alignment of the solar system an Earth with the rest of the galaxy will cause changes to the Sun and planets (som eof which are already obeservable)
If this is true it may well be the catalyst for the genetic change that we need to get past the dysfunctional behavior in our current society.

Key Point
If you have a spiritual view of why you’re here, then it’s probably something like “to learn and grow as part of evolutionary journey of your soul”.
On the other hand, because you’re human with these genes trying to run the show under the surface of things, your part of a race that is in part gentle, caring, hateful, loving, violent, bigoted, helpful, courageous, rascist, compassionate, cruel, visionary, devoted and at times just plain crazy – on occasion all in the same day!
So the key point is that we need to make a constant personal effort to choose the moral, ethical and community-oriented path (if that’s the path we want to take), otherwise our genes will direct us down the self-serving path.
This provides a different context to our common assumption that we, as children, are born innocent, but somehow become corrupted as we grow up on our way to ending up as self-serving adults.
The hypothetical moral, ethical, sustainable, community-oriented human being that is commonly portrayed in literature doesn’t happen automatically, except for a small percentage.
It requires you and me to apply constant personal vigilance, effort and conscious choice in your actions.
We lament – “If only the world didn’t <insert any condition you choose here>, we would be moral, ethical, sustainable, community-oriented human beings – honestly!”
Well the reality is the majority of us – 90%, 95%, 99%? - of us don’t behave like that – at least not consistently. This is not just a recent phenomenon, it has been like that throughout human history.
Prisoners of Our Genes
Our idea of ourselves as human beings as free thinking, fundamentally ethical entities, ignores one crucial factor – the huge influence our genes have on our thinking and behavior.
Jay Hanson was the originator of www.dieoff.org. He researched and expressed this issue with great clarity (along with many other issues).
Our in-built computer i.e. our brain is not like a normal computer.
The crucial difference is our brain – at our current level of development – is delivered with a major, inbuilt bias, namely the drive to further the survival and dispersion of our genes, at almost any cost. This underlying, genetic drive plays a huge role in how our basic behavior is directed.
Despite what we like to think, we are no different from other social animals in this way, which is not surprising considering we have the same evolutionary origins and basic genetic structure.
Part of our genes’ cunning is that this drive is hidden to most people. That is we are programmed not to see the reality of what our genes are driving us to do.
However, if we look around us, the results are evident everywhere in the situation on the planet. Examples:
- Overpopulation
- A clearly unsustainable way of life – we are literally eating our environment
- The dominance of personal gain over communal benefit or sustainability, often manifesting as corruption at all levels of society
- Crime, racial hatred, religious intolerance, war etc
- Short-termism in almost everything we do (genes don’t appear to think beyond their immediate descendants)
Impact on Sustainability
An important related point is that society is a reflection of our genes. Society is currently set up to encourage people to pursue personal gain (aka “the tragedy of the commons”) over community well being and sustainability.
From a sustainability viewpoint, this orients society in completely the wrong direction, because society measures your success or value by how much you consume, or acquire for your descendants to consume.
You might say well if only “they” (i.e. the leaders/politicians) would let us we would would share everything equitably and love our neighbours.
The point is there little evidence for this in human history, or in our current collective behavior. So-called “ideal societies” that have been set up have generally failed, usually for “political” reasons i.e. the people involved couldn’t reconcile their personal objectives with the communal path and the community collapsed.
So in summary, the only logic I can see in our genes from the spiritual perspective is that their (divine?) objective was to enable the planet to accommodate the maximum possible number of people on Earth for a particular event, perhaps the 2012 event.
